How to receive earthquake alerts on iPhone

A good iPhone setup combines official emergency alerts, local early-warning coverage where it exists, and optional notifications for places you want to monitor.

3. Use ShakeAlert-powered options only where they apply

USGS says ShakeAlert-powered alerts are available for residents and visitors in California, Oregon and Washington through several delivery channels. These can include Wireless Emergency Alerts and supported phone operating-system features. The MyShake app is another USGS-listed option for iOS in the ShakeAlert coverage area. There is no official app simply called “ShakeAlert”; be wary of apps that imply universal or guaranteed warning.

Outside that region, earthquake warning systems are organized differently. Japan, Taiwan, Mexico and other places operate or distribute their own public earthquake-warning systems. Follow the local civil-protection or seismic agency rather than assuming a U.S. service works abroad. If you receive an official warning or feel shaking, take the protective action recommended by local authorities immediately.

The USGS Earthquake Notification Service can send information about earthquakes that match saved criteria. It is valuable for researchers, families, travelers and property owners, but it is not ShakeAlert. The message follows detection and publication, and catalog values such as magnitude, depth and location can be revised.
